Hirschgrubenalm
3.7About
The alm is a working dairy farm and simple mountain pasture hut, typical of the region. It offers around 40 beds in basic dormitory accommodation. Meals focus on traditional Austrian mountain fare—think schnitzel, käsespätzle, and fresh milk products from the farm's own herd. The kitchen provides hearty fuel rather than fine dining. Water is available but showers are basic. Open May through October, with reduced service in shoulder months. The hut closes in winter.
Book direct by phone or email at least 2–3 weeks ahead for summer weekends and July. July and August see steady weekend traffic from hikers based in Lofer. Weekday visits in June and September offer quieter conditions and easier booking. Half-board (bed and evening meal) is standard. Camping is not permitted. Bring cash; card payments are unreliable in this remote location.
