Hoishütte

The Hoishütte sits at 2,341m in the Radstädter Tauern, roughly midway between Radstadt and the Obertauern pass. Reach it from Radstadt via the Untertal valley—a steady 4-hour ascent of 1,200m elevation gain on a well-marked path. In summer, park at Untertal and follow the trail south as it steepens through larch forest before breaking into open meadows. The hut serves as a logical rest point on multi-day routes across the Tauern ridge or as a base for day hikes around the high grasslands. Winter access is only for experienced mountaineers with ski or climbing skills.
The Hoishütte is managed by the Salzburg section of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and holds around 40 beds in mixed and private rooms. They serve full meals and packed lunches. A small bar operates for tea and coffee. The kitchen caters well to vegetarian diets if you notify them ahead. Water comes from a mountain spring. The hut typically opens from mid-June to September, depending on snow melt and weather—check conditions in early June before planning an alpine crossing.
Book directly through the OeAV Salzburg office at least 3 weeks ahead for July and August. June and September are quieter and easier to secure. Bring a torch as the hut closes at 10pm. The path from here to Brenner Sattel (2,512m) takes 2 hours and links to routes toward Obertauern and the Tauern trail.
