Illighütte

Salzburg, Austria
About
The Illighütte sits at 2,107m in the Reiteralpe range above the Bruck valley, roughly 20km south of Salzburg city. Reach it from the village of Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße via the Schwarzlehenalm trail—a steady 3.5-hour climb gaining 1,200m. The final approach crosses high pastures with views toward the Reiter Alpe massif. Most parties start early from the valley to avoid afternoon weather build-up on these exposed slopes.
The OeAV-managed hut offers 50 beds split across several rooms, with dormitory and smaller group spaces. The kitchen serves hot meals for dinner and packed lunches for onward hikers. The hut has no running water—supplies come from snowmelt and collected rainwater. Toilets are composting style. The season runs mid-May through September; July and August draw consistent crowds. The hut makes a logical base for traversing the Reiter Alpe ridge or descending toward the Schwarzlehenalm.
Book 6-8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or post; online booking is unavailable. Staff speak German and limited English. The hut is staffed full-time during season. Arrive with self-sufficiency in mind—the location is genuinely remote and supply runs are infrequent. Bring cash for payment.
