Kapelleralm

Kapelleralm sits at 1,510m in the Salzburg Alps, above the Saalbach valley. Reach it from Saalbach village in 1.5 hours on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through mixed forest. The hut is also accessible from Viehhofen to the north via a 2-hour approach. Both routes are straightforward summer hiking—no scrambling required. In winter, check conditions before attempting the approach.

The hut is a working alpine dairy farm as well as a mountain inn, which shapes its character and operating pattern. It serves simple Austrian mountain food: Kaiserschmarrn, Erdäpfelsalat, fresh milk, and hearty soups. Bed capacity is around 30 in basic dormitory rooms. Shower facilities are available but water is heated on demand, so ask ahead. The hut operates year-round but is quieter in winter; confirm opening dates before planning a winter trip. Meals are typically available from 10:00 onwards for day hikers, and dinner service runs from 18:00.

Book directly by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends, especially July and August. Weekday visits outside peak season rarely need advance notice. The hut fills quickly on summer Saturdays and during school holidays. Pay in cash if possible—card payments may incur a surcharge. The approach is family-friendly, making Kapelleralm popular with parents hiking with children, so expect company on good-weather weekends.
