Moarhütte

The Moarhütte sits at 2,036m in the Steinernes Meer range, roughly 8km south of Berchtesgaden. Most hikers reach it from the Bluntausee trailhead near Strub in about 4 hours, gaining 900m via the Bluntautal valley. The route is well-marked but exposed in places; it's serious hiking, not a walk. You can also approach from the Königssee side in Germany, which takes longer but offers a different perspective on this limestone karst landscape.

The hut is run by the OeAV and sleeps around 40 people in mixed dormitory rooms. Meals are solid—expect schnitzel, stews, and vegetarian options. The kitchen serves breakfast from 7am and dinner from 6pm; order dinner the night before if you're not eating communally. There's no shower, but there is running water and basic toilets. The hut opens from May to October, weather permitting. Winter access is possible but requires winter mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness. This is working hut, not a resort—comfort is functional.
