Niederegghütte

Niederegghütte sits at 1,804m on the Untersberger Kalkstock east of Salzburg. Reach it from Untersbergbahn station in Elsbethen (20 minutes south of Salzburg city center by S-Bahn). The cable car ascends to 1,776m in 10 minutes; from there, marked trails lead to the hut in roughly 30 minutes. You can also walk up from the Untersberger Alm trailhead in 2–3 hours if you prefer. The hut provides a jumping-off point for day walks across the Untersberg plateau, which offers level terrain and good views toward Salzburg and the surrounding ridges. The nearby Mauererkogel (1,894m) is a popular extension.
The hut is run by the Salzburg Alpine Club (Salzburger Alpenverein). It offers 30 beds across multiple rooms and dormitories. Meals include hearty lunches and three-course dinners made from local ingredients; vegetarian options are standard. The kitchen serves coffee and cake in the afternoon. There are two toilets with running water but no shower. The hut runs year-round, though staffing is reduced in winter; ring ahead before December or January visits.
Book directly by phone or email as early as possible for weekends and holidays. July and August fill quickly. Off-season (November–March) requires advance notice to ensure someone is there. The hut is popular with day visitors from Salzburg, so expect crowds on good-weather weekends.
