Oberhütte am See
2.5About
The hut serves 60–80 guests across dormitory beds and a handful of double rooms. Staff cook simple Bavarian and Austrian Alpine fare—expect schnitzel, spätzle, and hearty soups. Meals are filling and portion sizes are large. The hut has a small bar, outdoor terrace facing the lake, and basic shower facilities. Water comes directly from the Obersee. It operates year-round but staffing is reduced November–March; contact ahead in winter. Hiking season runs May through October with July and August drawing significant crowds.
Book three months ahead for July and August weekends. Email the hut directly or contact via the Berchtesgaden National Park information centre. Solo walkers can often find beds with shorter notice on weekdays. The hut does not accept online booking platforms, so phone or email is essential. Note that the hut straddles the German-Austrian border; you'll need your passport even though hiking the trails requires no formalities.
