Ostermaisalm

Ostermaisalm sits at 1,380m in the Salzburgian Alps, above the Salzach valley between Lofer and St. Martin bei Lofer. Reach it from the village of St. Martin in 1.5 to 2 hours on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through mixed forest. The path is popular but manageable for anyone comfortable with moderate uphill hiking. You can also approach from Lofer on the opposite side—allow 2.5 hours for that route. The hut sits on a working alpine pasture with views across the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge massif.
Ostermaisalm operates as a simple mountain dairy farm with seasonal accommodation and a modest restaurant. The hut typically has 20–30 beds in small rooms, basic but clean. Meals focus on traditional Salzburg fare: kaiserschmarrn, sturgeon soup, and whatever the dairy is producing that day. The kitchen uses milk and cheese from the farm's herd. The hut is usually open May through September, though weather can affect earlier or later dates—contact ahead in shoulder months. There's no shower, and electricity is limited. This is an alm in its traditional sense: functional, not luxurious.
Book directly by phone or email at least two weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. Weekday visits in June or September rarely need advance booking. Groups should contact earlier. The hut has no website but maintains a phone line during opening hours. Expect to pay roughly €20–25 for a bed and €12–15 for a hot meal.
