Steinwandhütte

Steinwandhütte sits at 1,532m on the northern flank of the Steinwand, above the Enns Valley south of Großraming in Upper Austria. Reach it in 2 hours 15 minutes from the Großraming village car park (950m) via a steady forest track that opens onto alpine meadow in the final approach. Most hikers use it as a base for ridge walks into the Nationalpark Kalkalpen or as a stop on longer traverses between the Enns Valley and Höllengebirge.
The hut sleeps 40 across shared dormitories and a handful of double rooms. The OeAV-run operation serves half-board meals—substantial dinners and breakfasts—with packed lunches available. Showers and toilets are basic but functional. There is no WiFi; this is a proper mountain refuge. The kitchen will accommodate vegetarians with advance notice. Open mid-May to late September, the hut operates year-round for self-catering outside these months with locked facilities available.
Book directly by phone or email at least 2–3 weeks ahead, essential for July and August weekends. Groups of eight or more should contact the warden 4–6 weeks in advance. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and on Saturdays when the weather is stable. Payment is cash or bank transfer; they do not accept credit cards on-site. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a good dormitory bed and join the dinner service.
