Ahornalmhütte

The Ahornalmhütte sits at 1,336m in the Schöckl massif near Graz, Styria. Reach it via the village of Stattegg, about 25km north of the city. The main approach takes 2.5 hours from the Stattegg carpark on a well-marked trail through beech forest. The hut lies on the edge of open pasture with views toward the Rax and Schneealpe ranges. This is accessible hiking—not technical, but steady climbing with decent elevation gain.

The hut is run as a traditional working alpine hut and serves walkers year-round. It offers simple dormitory beds (capacity around 30) and a small number of private rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare: schnitzel, stews, fresh bread. The kitchen will prepare packed lunches if ordered in advance. Water comes from the spring. There's no electricity in the building—the hut operates entirely off-grid with gas lighting and heating. This is genuine alpine hospitality, not a comfort hotel. The terrace gives views west toward Graz on clear days.

Book directly by phone before visiting. Summer weekends (June to September) fill quickly—aim to call 2–3 days ahead for weekend visits. Midweek slots are usually available with less notice. The hut is a popular spot for families and day-walkers from Graz, so expect company on good-weather Sundays. The OeAV maintains the trail system in this region. Winter access is weather-dependent; confirm conditions before attempting a winter visit.
