Zellerhütte

Zellerhütte sits at 1575m in the Sölk Valley (Sölktal) in Styria, a quiet corner of the Austrian Alps east of the main ranges. The hut lies on the Sölk Valley hiking route, roughly midway between Gröbming (80 minutes) and the valley head. From Gröbming, follow the valley floor road to Sölk village, then branch onto the marked trail. The walk takes 2–2.5 hours and gains minimal elevation, making it accessible even for slow walkers. In winter the valley access road can close; check conditions before planning a trip.

The hut is a small, traditional operation with around 40 beds in simple rooms. Meals are home-cooked and hearty—expect Styrian specialities and vegetable-heavy dishes. The hut serves as a base for day hikes into the surrounding limestone hills and forest, particularly toward the Sölk Peaks (Sölktaler Alpen). Water and basic supplies are available; do not rely on finding shops nearby. Zellerhütte opens year-round but operates at reduced capacity in winter months (November–March). Phone ahead before winter visits.

Book directly with the hut during peak season (July–August); contact them 4–6 weeks ahead if you want guaranteed beds. Outside summer, availability is rarely a problem. The hut is staffed daily but may have limited opening hours in shoulder seasons. The Sölk Valley is less crowded than famous hiking regions, so Zellerhütte fills mainly during school holidays and weekends. Weekend bookings in summer still need advance notice.
