Gloggnitzer Hut

Gloggnitzer Hütte sits at 1,552m on the southern slopes of the Hohe Veitsch, in the limestone hills between Gloggnitz and Reichenau in Styria. Reach it from Gloggnitz village in 2.5 hours via the marked trail heading northeast through beech forest, or from Reichenau in 3 hours. The approach is steady but not steep—ideal for acclimatization on multi-day trips. The hut also serves hikers tackling the Veitsch circuit and traverses into the Mürztal.
The OeAV-managed hut has 40 beds across simple dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals follow standard Alpine fare: hearty soups, schnitzel, and vegetable dishes. The kitchen provides packed lunches. Water comes from a spring; showers are available. The hut opens year-round, though staffing is reduced November to March—check ahead if traveling in winter. Book directly with the hut by phone (+43 2666 2278) at least one week ahead for July and August weekends. Mid-week stays need less notice. June and September are quieter but equally reliable. The hut fills quickly on holiday weekends and during school vacations. Winter visits require advance coordination with management.
