Habsburghaus
3.4About
The Habsburghaus stands at about 1,785 m on the broad limestone plateau of the Rax, part of the Rax-Schneeberg group on the border between Lower Austria and Styria. One of the classic high-plateau refuges of the Vienna hinterland, it dates from the turn of the 20th century, with its foundation stone laid in 1899. The hut is owned by the Österreichischer Gebirgsverein, a section of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), and is run by a resident tenant serving regional home cooking. It sleeps around 36 in beds plus roughly 65 in dormitory (Matratzenlager) places, and a winter room is available year-round. The main season runs from mid-May to early November, with occasional Monday closures in autumn. The Rax is a walkers' plateau rather than a single peak, so the Habsburghaus makes an accessible base for family hikes and plateau traverses toward neighbouring huts such as the Karl-Ludwig-Haus. The most popular approaches climb from the Naßwald valley at Hinternaßwald, from Preiner Gscheid across the plateau, or — most easily — from the top station of the Rax cable car. Luggage transport by a material cable car can be arranged on request. Booking is by phone or through the ÖAV online reservation system.
