Halterhütte

The Halterhütte sits at 1,524m in the Poßruck range, a modest limestone massif in southern Styria. Approach from Bad Gleichenberg (the nearest town, 15km south) via the village of Unterried, then walk the marked trail to the hut in 2.5 hours. The route climbs steadily through mixed forest with minimal exposure. From Graz it's a 90-minute drive to the trailhead. Most hikers use the hut as a base for day walks across the Poßruck, rather than as part of a multi-day traverse.
The hut offers 40 beds in simple rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Austrian fare—expect schnitzel, stews, and regional cheese. Hot showers are available. The hut operates year-round, though it's quieter November to March. It's managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and staffed seasonally; winter visits require advance notice. The setting is unremarkable compared to higher Alpine huts—you're surrounded by beech and spruce forest rather than rock and ice.
Book directly by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends between May and September. July and August weekends fill quickly. The hut is genuinely quiet in winter if you contact the keeper beforehand. The trail is snow-free most of the year, though it can be icy in January and February. This is a practical base for moderate hill walking in Styria's quieter ranges, not a destination for technical climbing or serious mountaineering.
