Linzer Haus / Wurzeralm

Linzer Haus sits on the Wurzeralm plateau at 1385m in central Styria, roughly 40km south of Liezen. The approach from Spital am Pyhrn takes 2.5 hours on foot via marked trails through mixed forest. Road access exists but the hut appeals primarily to hikers using it as a base for the surrounding plateau walks and connections to neighbouring peaks. The location works well as a link hut on longer valley traverses through the Pyr Alps.

The hut runs year-round and accommodates around 50 guests across simple rooms. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—expect solid soups, schnitzel, and regional cheese dishes. The kitchen handles vegetarian requests with notice. Showers and basic washrooms are standard; the hut has no electricity in some older wings, which adds to the rustic appeal. Winter visits are possible but conditions on the plateau can deteriorate quickly, so check conditions before committing.

The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). Book direct by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends year-round. July and August weekends fill regularly, so aim for 4 weeks' notice during peak season. The hut rarely turns away single hikers or small groups mid-week. Winter bookings should be confirmed well in advance as staffing adjusts seasonally.
