Neunkirchner Naturfreundehaus

Neunkirchner Naturfreundehaus sits at 758m in the Stubalpe region of Styria, in the eastern Austrian Alps. The hut is reached from Neukirchen an der Enns, a small village in the Pöls Valley. Most hikers approach via the marked trail from the village, a walk of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your route. The hut serves as a base for exploring the rolling forested terrain and ridge walks of the southern Stubalpe—easier ground than higher Alpine passes, but solid day-hiking country with good views across to the Sölktal.
The Naturfreundehaus is a simple, working hut run by the Naturfreunde Österreich organisation. It has around 30 beds in basic dormitory rooms, plus a small number of private doubles. The kitchen serves hearty Austrian meals at lunch and dinner; book ahead if you plan to eat. The hut opens year-round, though winter visits require checking conditions and staff availability. Facilities include a common room with a wood stove, a small bar, and toilets with cold-water washing. Don't expect hot showers or modern comfort—this is a refuge hut, not a hotel.
Book directly by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead, longer during July and August weekends. The hut fills quickly during summer months and on Austrian public holidays. Groups of 10 or more should contact well in advance. The Naturfreunde welcome both members and non-members, though membership offers small discounts.
