Raxalm Berggasthof

The Raxalm Berggasthof sits on the Rax plateau at 1,547m in the Semmering Alps, roughly 100km southwest of Vienna. The hut is accessible year-round via a road that switchbacks up from the village of Payerbach. Most hikers approach on foot from Payerbach station (45 minutes) or from the Rax cable car station (1 hour). The cable car cuts your ascent time significantly if you're not hiking the full approach.

The Berggasthof functions as a traditional mountain inn rather than a climbing hut. It offers 40 beds in simple rooms, a restaurant serving Austrian alpine fare, and a small bar. Meals focus on local specialities like Kasnocken and Erdäpfelsuppe. You'll find basic rooms with shared or private bathrooms. The hut opens year-round, making it reliable in winter when many alpine huts close. Water and power are reliable. This is a working farm-restaurant first, mountain hut second—expect a different atmosphere than purpose-built climbing huts.

Winter weekends attract Vienna-based day-hikers since the cable car and road access make it easy to reach. Mid-week visits offer better availability year-round.
