Scheibelalm

Scheibelalm sits at 1,850m in the Sölk Valley, a side valley cutting into the Schladming Tauern range. Reach it via the village of Sölk-Bad (20km north of Sölk-Ödensee). From the carpark at the Sölk Valley entrance, walk 2.5 hours up the valley floor to the hut. The trail is well-marked and steady, gaining 550m with minimal scrambling. Most hikers use this as a base for traversing the Sölk Valley or climbing peaks like Sölkspitz (2,142m) to the north.
Scheibelalm is a working dairy farm first, mountain hut second. The family runs around 20 beds in simple, clean rooms. Meals centre on regional Styrian food cooked with produce from the farm. Half-board (bed and dinner) is standard; breakfast is hearty. The hut has no WiFi—expect to be offline. Water comes from the hut's own spring. There is no electricity in rooms. The season runs late May through late September, with reduced operations in shoulder months. The hut closes in winter.
Book direct by phone or email at least 4-6 weeks ahead for July and August. The hut fills quickly in peak season, especially weekends. June and early September offer quieter conditions with easier availability. Payment is cash preferred, though bank transfer works too. Confirm your arrival time when booking—the family needs notice for dinner preparation.
