Schutzhaus Masenberg

Schutzhaus Masenberg sits at 1,501m in the Seckauer Tauern range, above the Sölk Valley in Styria. Most hikers approach from Sölk, a small village at 1,080m—the hut is 4–5 hours uphill from there. A shorter approach (2–3 hours) starts from Kamp, higher in the valley. The hut sits on a well-marked trail and works as a waypoint for multi-day routes crossing the Tauern massif, or as a base for day walks in the limestone and alpine meadow terrain around it.
The hut has basic mountain accommodation with room for around 40 people in dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals focus on traditional Austrian mountain food—expect hearty soups, schnitzel, and simple packed lunches. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut typically opens from May through October, though this can shift with snow melt and weather. Standards are straightforward: you get a bed, a hot meal, and shelter, not luxury.
Book directly with the hut, especially for July and August when the Sölk Valley attracts steady weekend traffic. Spring and autumn are quieter and offer better weather windows for ridge walks. The hut sits on the OeAV system and can get busy on summer Saturdays when lowland hikers head for the heights. Off-season bookings (May, June, September, October) are usually simpler.
