Schwarzalmhütte

The Schwarzalmhütte sits at 1540m in the Niedere Tauern range of Styria. The hut is accessible from the village of Oberwölz, reached via the Große Bretagne valley. The approach takes 2.5 to 3 hours on a well-marked trail that follows the stream upward through mixed forest. This is a solid day hike for anyone comfortable on mountain paths, with steady elevation gain but no scrambling. In summer, you can also access it from the Afling side via different valleys.
The hut is run by the OeAV and offers around 50 beds in dormitory and double rooms. Full board is available: expect simple, filling Alpine food. The kitchen prepares packed lunches for onward walking days. Water comes from the spring. The hut operates year-round but is quietest mid-week in shoulder seasons. Winter visits are possible but verify conditions with the hut before travelling.

The hut lies on several through-hike routes across the Niedere Tauern, so weekends fill quickly. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a bed for the night and allow time for paperwork and settling in before dinner service.
