Sonnleitnerhütte

Sonnleitnerhütte sits at 1215m in the Seckauer Tauern range of Styria, roughly 2 hours' walk from the village of Seckau. The hut serves as a base for traversing the ridge between Hochreiter (2,471m) and Zeiritzkogel (2,396m). Most hikers approach via the marked trail from Seckau, gaining 700m elevation steadily through mixed forest. The hut also connects to longer ridge walks linking toward the Sölker Pass region.
Sonnleitnerhütte has 40 beds spread across several rooms and operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. The OeAV Sektion Knittelfeld maintains the hut and serves hot meals at dinner. You can bring your own food or order the three-course evening menu in advance. Water comes from a spring. Basic showers and a small drying room are available. The atmosphere is straightforward—this is a working hut, not a resort.
Book your bed and dinner at least one day ahead by calling or emailing the hut. July and August weekends fill quickly, so aim for 3–4 weeks' notice. The hut is busiest during the school holidays (mid-July through early August) and when local hiking clubs organize group outings. Mid-week visits guarantee quieter conditions and easier booking.
