Sonnschienhütte

Sonnschienhütte sits at 1,526m in the Sölk Valley east of Schladming in Styria. The hut lies on the Sölkpass hiking route, a classic multi-day traverse through the Sölk Alps. Reach it from Sölkpass Village (1,200m) in 1.5 hours, or from Wörschach railway station in 4 hours via the valley floor. The approach is straightforward alpine hiking with good trail markers. This hut works well as a mid-route stop on longer Sölk Valley treks, or as a weekend destination from Schladming.
Sonnschienhütte holds 47 beds across several rooms. The OeAV manages the hut with a simple but reliable setup: flush toilets and a dining room where you eat with other guests. There's no WiFi. Meals are available at reasonable prices for hikers—expect hearty Austrian fare rather than fine dining. The hut opens year-round, though it runs on reduced capacity and hours during winter months. Water comes from the mountain spring, so it's reliable except during extended dry spells. The location is quiet; this is hiking country, not a social destination.
Book directly by phone or via the OeAV website at least 2 weeks ahead. July and August demand 4-6 weeks notice. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. The hut takes cash and card payments. Winter visits require a phone call ahead—staff may not be present in January and February. Come prepared for basic comfort and the company of other hikers doing the Sölkpass trail.
