About

Bichlalm sits at 1,700m in the Zillertal, a major hiking hub in central Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen by hiking 2.5 hours north through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The approach is moderate and well-marked. Alternatively, ride the Ahornbahn cable car from Mayrhofen to 2,000m and descend 45 minutes to the hut. This reverse approach works well if you're short on time or arriving tired. The hut anchors the Zillertal's mid-range circuit hikes, sitting between the valley floor and the higher ridges.
Bichlalm is a working dairy farm that serves hikers year-round. It operates as a simple guesthouse with around 20 bed places in small rooms. Meals focus on regional Tyrolean food—expect Kaiserschmarrn, Erdäpfelsuppe, and fresh dairy products from the farm itself. The hut is not luxurious but honest and comfortable. It has a large south-facing terrace that fills with hikers on weekends. Water and power are available but wifi is not.
Book direct by phone or in person; the hut has no online reservation system. Call ahead in summer (June–September) as weekend capacity fills quickly. July and August are busy. May, September, and October offer the best balance of weather and calm crowds. The hut closes November through April. Payment is cash only.
