Breitenkopfhütte

The Breitenkopfhütte sits at 2,017m in the Zillertal Alps, roughly 90 minutes' walk from Mayrhofen. From the village, follow the Zillertal Höhenweg uphill through mixed forest, then break treeline to reach open pasture and the hut. The final approach steepens but stays straightforward. You can also access it from Finkenberg via the Zillertal Höhenweg in about 2.5 hours. The hut sits well-positioned for traverses through the surrounding ridges and peaks.
The hut operates year-round and has 60 beds split across small dorms and doubles. Cooking happens on a wood stove; expect traditional Austrian fare. Showers run cold only. There's no WiFi, so plan on actual conversation or sleep. The DAV Sektion Coburg runs it straightforwardly without frills. It works best as a base for nearby walking or as a stage on longer ridge traverses rather than a destination on its own.
Book direct with the hut. July and August fill 4–6 weeks ahead. The shoulder seasons (June and September) stay quieter and offer better weather windows anyway.
