Falkenhütte

Falkenhütte sits at 1846m on the eastern flank of the Karwendel range, above the village of Scharnitz in Tyrol. Reach it from Scharnitz in 2.5 hours via the Scharnitztal valley trail, which gains 600m steadily through mixed forest. The final section opens onto alpine meadows with views toward the Hochkarspitze. In winter, approach from Mittenwald in Bavaria (30 minutes by car to Scharnitz trailhead) when snow blocks higher access routes.
The DAV Sektion Oberland operates this 70-bed hut as a working mountain base rather than a destination in itself. Half-board runs to around €55–65 per night. The kitchen serves substantial dinners and hearty breakfasts. Hot showers are available—unusual for huts at this elevation. Beds range from dormitories to a few small private rooms. The hut stays open year-round, though staffing thins in April and November. Winter access requires avalanche awareness and often snowshoes. Expect a busy atmosphere on weekends when Munich climbers arrive for quick mountain training.
Book by phone directly with the hut for July and August weekends; same-day slots vanish. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons (May, September, early October) offer solitude and reliable beds. The hut has no WiFi—plan accordingly if you need connectivity. Mobile signal is patchy. Bring cash; card payments aren't always reliable at this elevation.
