Frederick-Simms-Hut

Frederick-Simms-Hütte sits at 2,002m on the Sörenberg in the Zillertal, serving as a base for ridge walks and peak ascents in the surrounding Ziller Alps. Reach it from Mayrhofen via the Penken cable car to 2,095m, then walk south across alpine meadows for 1.5 hours. Alternatively, hike from Ginzling in 4 hours via the Zeitbach valley—this route gains 1,200m but avoids cable-car costs. The hut lies on the main ridge between Zuckerhütl (3,507m) and Hochfeiler (3,510m), putting it within striking distance of serious summit days.

The DAV Sektion Stuttgart manages this 70-bed hut with dormitory and double rooms. Evening meals focus on filling alpine cuisine. Self-catering is possible if you bring supplies. The hut operates from June through mid-October, with daily staffing during summer. Water comes from a spring below the hut; toilets are basic outdoor plumbing.

Book directly with the hut by email or phone. July and August weekends fill 4-6 weeks ahead, especially for parties of 10 or more. June, September and early October offer better availability. The hut is less crowded mid-week year-round. You can also book through the DAV or via accommodation platforms that list OeAV and DAV huts. Confirm that your Alpine Club membership is current if using direct booking discounts—DAV members pay less than non-members.
