Gruttenhütte

The Gruttenhütte sits at 1,620m in the Ötztal valley, deep in the Tyrolean Alps. Access is straightforward: from Ötz village, follow the valley hiking trail south for roughly 2–2.5 hours. The route is well-marked and gains minimal elevation, making it approachable for families and moderate hikers. The hut serves as both a destination walk and a base camp for longer treks into the surrounding peaks and high valleys.

The hut offers around 40–50 bed spaces split between private rooms and dormitory accommodation. Meals are prepared daily, with hearty Alpine fare at dinner and a good breakfast buffet. The season runs from late May through October. Basic facilities include showers, a drying room, and a small bar. The hut operates as part of the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) network and maintains reliable standards for comfort and food quality.

Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 4–6 weeks ahead if you're planning a July or August visit. July and early August see steady traffic from families; shoulder seasons (June, September) are quieter and often easier to secure. The hut fills regularly on weekends year-round. Confirm exact opening dates before travelling, as spring and autumn conditions in the Ötztal can vary. Payment in cash is preferred but increasingly card payments are accepted—check current policy when booking.
