Hochhörndler Hut

Hochhörndler Hütte sits at 1800m in the Zillertal valley, Tyrol. Reach it from Mayrhofen by walking northeast through the valley for 2.5 hours, or start from the Zemmtal and walk southwest for 3 hours. The approach is steady with minimal technical difficulty, making it accessible for most summer hikers. The hut marks a natural stop on longer valley traverses and serves as a basecamp for day walks in the surrounding peaks.

The hut offers 50 beds across mixed dorm and private rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Alpine food: expect good Tiroler specialities for dinner, substantial breakfasts, and packed lunches for onward walks. Hot showers are available. The hut operates from June through September, managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). Facilities are straightforward and functional rather than luxurious—this is working hut territory, not a resort.

Book at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email through the OeAV website. Outside peak season (June, September), you can often find beds with shorter notice. The hut is popular with hikers linking Zillertal base towns to higher mountain routes, so weekdays are quieter than weekends. Arrive by late afternoon if you haven't pre-booked, as walk-ups fill quickly during good weather.
