Otto-Leixl-Hut

Otto-Leixl-Hut sits at 1,911m in the Zillertal, on the eastern flank of the Zillertal Alps. Reach it from Mayrhofen via the Ahornbahn cable car (2,000m station), then walk the marked trail toward Höhenstraße in 3–4 hours. The approach is steady uphill through forest and open terrain. Winter access becomes difficult; check conditions before December. The hut is also accessible from Fürkelalm in the west in roughly 4 hours, though this route sees fewer hikers.
The hut operates year-round and sleeps 16 people across 4 private rooms and dormitory beds. The DAV manages it, so members get discounted rates. Meals are simple but filling—expect hot evening meals and breakfast. The hut runs on rainwater collection and has solar power; facilities are basic but functional. No shower, but a washroom is available. This is a working hut, not a hotel, so expect minimal creature comforts. Cell signal is patchy. Summer is busy; weekends fill quickly.
Book directly with the hut (contact details via DAV website or Alpine Club register) at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. Arrive by late afternoon to guarantee hot food. Bring cash for some expenses; card payment is unreliable in poor weather.
