Schmiedhofalm

Schmiedhofalm sits at 1,940m in the Zillertal, accessed from the village of Mayrhofen. The approach takes 2.5 hours on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through forest and alpine meadow. Most hikers start from the Penken valley and work uphill on the marked path toward the Grübelspitze ridge. The hut marks a natural pause point on multi-day routes crossing the Zillertal chain or climbing toward the 2,535m Ahornspitze.
Schmiedhofalm runs as a simple mountain hut offering around 30 beds in mixed dormitories. Meals focus on hearty Austrian fare—Kaiserschmarrn, Erdäpfelpuffer, Marende boards—cooked fresh daily. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut has no shower but offers washing facilities. Blankets and pillows provided; bring a sleeping bag liner. The season runs mid-June through October, depending on snow melt and weather. Summer weekends fill quickly.
Book direct by phone or email 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. Weekdays in June and September offer better availability. The hut staff speak German fluently and basic English. Half-board (bed, breakfast, dinner) costs around €50–60 per person. Pay in cash or by bank transfer before arrival. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure a hot meal; the kitchen closes by 7pm.
