Schönauer Alm

Schönauer Alm sits at 1,752m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessed from the village of Schönau an der Königssee in Bavaria. The most direct route climbs 550m in 1.5 hours from the village. From Königssee itself, allow 2.5 hours via the forest path. You can also approach from Funtensee to the south in 2 hours, making this a logical junction point for longer traverse routes. Winter access is possible but requires avalanche awareness.
The hut is managed by the German Alpine Club (DAV) and accommodates around 50 guests in shared dormitory rooms. The kitchen serves hearty meals at lunch and dinner; bring your own breakfast or order it the night before. Toilet facilities are basic—water comes from a natural spring. The hut operates year-round, though February is typically closed for maintenance. The south-facing location means reliable conditions even in marginal seasons. Excellent base for climbs of Hochkalter (2,607m) and Schellenberghorn (2,059m).
Book directly through the hut by phone or email. July and August fill 6-8 weeks in advance. Shoulder seasons (June, September) usually have availability with one week's notice. Overnight phone reservations are accepted and confirmed by email. The hut prefers groups to arrange stays in advance, but solo hikers can often find space on the day in spring and autumn.
