Kelheimer Hut

Kelheimer Hütte sits at 2,237m in the Zillertal Alps, reached via the Zillertal valley south of Mayrhofen. The standard approach takes 4–5 hours from the village of Finkenberg, climbing steeply through forest before breaking into alpine meadow. The hut serves as a base for routes into the surrounding peaks and as a waypoint on multi-day traverses across the Zillertal. Summer access is straightforward; winter approach depends on snow conditions and requires mountaineering experience.
The hut is managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV) and offers 80 beds across dormitory rooms. Kitchen staff prepare hearty dinners and breakfasts; packed lunches are available on request. The hut has flush toilets, shower facilities, and reliable drinking water from mountain springs. It operates from June through September in summer season, with some weekends open in shoulder months—confirm opening dates directly before planning a spring or autumn visit. Mobile signal is weak but present.
Book directly with the hut from April onwards for July and August weekends; mid-week slots fill less quickly. Email or telephone well ahead if you need shower access or have specific dietary requirements. Weekend capacity reaches full quickly in July. The hut can provide current conditions reports for surrounding peaks and maintains good relations with local mountain guides if you need professional support for technical routes.
