Große Klaushütte

Große Klaushütte sits at 1,535m in the Sengsengebirge, a limestone massif between Steyr and Reichraming in Upper Austria. The hut is a 2.5-hour walk from Reichraming village via the Große Klaus gorge—a steep but straightforward route following the stream. The approach is direct: take the hiking trail marked for Klaus Alm, crossing wooden bridges through narrow canyon walls. From Linz, drive to Reichraming (50km), park in the village, and start early. The location works as a base for ridge walks across the Sengsengebirge or as a waypoint on longer traverses through the limestone plateau.

Große Klaushütte operates as a staffed Alpine hut managed by the Austrian Alpine Club (OeAV). The hut serves hot meals at lunch and dinner—expect simple, substantial food rather than fine dining. Count on 40–50 beds in dormitories and a handful of private rooms. Water comes from the spring; toilets are basic but functional. The hut opens year-round but is most reliably staffed May to October. Winter visits are possible but confirm opening status first.

Book directly by email or phone. July and August fill quickly—reserve 6–8 weeks ahead for summer weekends. Weekdays in shoulder season (May, September, October) rarely need advance notice. The hut is popular with day-hikers on summer Sundays, so avoid those if you want a quieter night.
