Ebenforstalm

Ebenforstalm sits at 1,340m in the Sengsengebirge range, roughly 90 minutes' walk from the village of Weyer in Upper Austria's Ennstal valley. The approach follows a well-marked path through beech forest with steady elevation gain. Most hikers start early from Weyer and arrive mid-morning. The hut is reachable year-round on foot, though snow can slow winter approaches. Mountain bikers can ride partway up the forest road.
The hut is a traditional working alpine farm offering simple accommodation and hearty meals. It sleeps around 30 guests in basic dormitory rooms. Meals focus on regional food—expect schnitzel, soups, and dairy products from the property. The kitchen provides packed lunches for day hikes. Water comes from the mountain spring. There's no hot shower, but the hut operates year-round and welcomes both day visitors and overnight guests. It's popular with Austrians doing weekend walks in the Sengsengebirge, not crowded with international tourists.

The hut closes briefly for maintenance in April and again for a few weeks in November. Arrive by early afternoon if you're staying overnight, as the kitchen stops serving dinner around 7pm.
