About

The Neue Reutlinger Hütte sits at 2,395m on the Schafberg, a prominent peak in the Appenzell Alps on the Vorarlberg-St Gallen border. Reach it from the village of Säntis in roughly 3 hours via the Säntis saddle, following a well-marked trail through alpine meadows and scree. The approach is straightforward but exposed to weather; bring waterproofs. You can also access the hut from Bad Ragaz or from the Säntis cable car, which shortens the approach significantly and is useful for tired legs or bad conditions.
The hut is run by DAV Sektion Reutlingen and accommodates around 60 people in a mix of dorm rooms and smaller shared bunks. The kitchen serves hot dinners and packed lunches; book meals when you reserve. Showers are available (cold water is standard). This is a proper working hut, not a hotel: expect basic comfort and shared facilities. The hut is open year-round but staffing is lighter outside the May to October season, so phone ahead in winter. It's popular with mountaineers approaching peaks in the Säntis massif and with hikers doing longer ridge walks across the Appenzell Alps.
Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; DAV members get priority for some dates. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and fine-weather weekends. Off-season visits (November to April) are possible but confirm opening times first.
