Zafernahütte

The Zafernahütte sits at 2,099m in the Appenzell Alps on the border between Vorarlberg and St. Gallen canton. Reach it from Säntis region via the Säntis-Appenzell traverse or from the Appenzell side. The standard approach from Appenzell takes around 3 hours of steady hiking through alpine meadow and rocky terrain. The hut is well-positioned for ridge walks along the Säntis massif and approaches to surrounding peaks.

The hut is managed by the OeAV (Austrian Alpine Club) and accommodates around 50 people in dormitory rooms. Meals are available on-site including hearty lunches and three-course dinners. Basic facilities include toilets and a small washroom with limited hot water. The hut operates year-round but services are reduced outside peak season (June to September). Winter access requires proper avalanche awareness, and the hut may have unstaffed periods. Self-catering options exist if the hut is closed.

June and September are quieter months with good weather odds and easier booking. Weekends fill faster than weekdays. Winter ascents should be discussed with the hut keeper before arrival, as conditions vary significantly. Bring cash; card payments may not be reliable given the hut's remote location.
