Widdersteinhütte

Widdersteinhütte sits at 2009m on the eastern flank of Widderstein in the Allgäu Alps, on the Vorarlberg–Bavaria border. Reach it from Baad in the Kleinwalsertal valley: the standard route climbs 900m over roughly 3 hours via the Gemstelpass trail. The path is steep and exposed in places, particularly near the summit approach. In winter, access becomes considerably harder. The hut works well as a base for ascending Widderstein (2533m) or for traversing the Gemstelpass to Schöllhorn.
The hut is run by the Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV) and offers 40–50 beds in dormitory rooms and a few doubles. Half-board is standard. The kitchen serves straightforward Alpine fare: expect hearty soups, meat dishes, and decent coffee. Water comes from a mountain spring. The hut has a small bar and a pleasant terrace with south-facing views. Opening runs from mid-May through October, though exact dates depend on snow cover and staffing. Winter weekends sometimes see a caretaker present; phone ahead to check.
Book directly by phone several weeks in advance for summer weekends and July–August. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and good-weather stretches. Mid-week visits in June and September generally require less planning. Arrive with cash: card payment is unreliable at this elevation. The nearest resupply is Baad, so bring any extras you need before setting out.
