Cabin de Rubren

Cabane de Rubren sits at 2,449m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, accessible from the Vallée de l'Isère. The standard approach follows the GR55 from Allevard-les-Bains, a 6–7 hour walk gaining roughly 1,400m. The trail climbs steadily through forest before opening into alpine meadow. In winter or when snow blocks the main route, approach from Prapoutel via the eastern flank. The cabin works as a base for peaks including Mont Blanc de Cheiron (2,928m) and Pic de la Charbonnière (2,834m).
The cabin is a basic, unguarded shelter with sleeping capacity for around 12–15 people on wooden platforms. There are no meals, heating, or water supply—bring a stove, fuel, food, and water treatment. The facility operates year-round but sees most traffic June through September. Winter climbing parties use it regularly, though alpine skills and avalanche awareness are essential. Check condition reports before heading in autumn or spring when sections may be snow-covered or iced.
Book directly with FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne), which manages the hut. Contact them 2–3 weeks in advance for July and August visits. Outside summer, the cabin is typically unmanaged—come prepared for self-service conditions and bring backup plans. Capacity fills quickly during school holidays and good-weather weekends in July.
