Cabin du Moutet

Cabane du Moutet sits at 2,876m in the Chaîne de la Tourbière, within Parc National des Écrins. Reach it from the Pré de la Dame trailhead near Saint-Véran (2,042m). The approach takes 4–5 hours over open pasture, scree, and rock terrain. Route-finding is straightforward but exposed to weather; start early to avoid afternoon storms. Winter snow lingers until June, making crampons necessary before late spring.
The cabin is unguarded and provides basic shelter for 8–10 people. There are no services: bring all food, water, and fuel. The structure has a wood stove, sleeping platforms with mattresses, and a cooking area. Most climbers use it as a base for summiting Pic de la Cabanette (3,084m) or traversing toward Mont Viso. Open year-round, though winter access requires mountaineering skills and avalanche awareness.
