Le Rocher Rond

Le Rocher Rond sits at 1,392m in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the foothills above the Vallée de l'Ubaye. The hut is reached on foot from the village of Barcelonnette, a 3-hour walk via the Pra Loup ski area. The trail is well-marked and moderately graded. In summer, a shuttle bus runs from Barcelonnette to Pra Loup, cutting the approach time to around 90 minutes. Winter access depends on snow conditions and requires mountain sense.
The hut holds 46 beds in dormitory rooms. Meals are available—book dinner and breakfast ahead if staying overnight. Hot showers are available. The hut is open year-round, though staffing and facilities vary by season. Summer months (June to September) are the main period. The location works well as a base for day walks in the surrounding terrain or as a waypoint on longer routes.
Contact the hut directly by email or phone to check availability and book meals. July and August fill quickly; aim to reserve at least 4 weeks ahead for these months. Outside peak season, booking 1–2 weeks ahead usually suffices. Confirm access conditions before arriving in winter or after heavy rain, as mountain roads may be affected.
