Rifugio Bertorello

Rifugio Bertorello sits at 1,375m in the Maritime Alps, on the border between France and Italy near the Vallée de la Roya. You reach it from the village of Tende (accessible by road from Nice, about 90km south). The approach takes 3–4 hours on foot from Tende, following marked trails through Mediterranean pine and larch forest. The hut serves as a base for day hikes into the Parc National du Mercantour and crossings toward the Italian valleys.
The rifugio is small—just 8 beds total—and operates as a simple mountain shelter. The guardian provides evening meals and breakfast when the hut is staffed. Water comes from a spring nearby. Expect basic dormitory-style accommodation with no electricity or heating beyond a wood stove. The hut is typically open from June to September, depending on snow conditions and staffing. Winter access is possible but unreliable.
Book by email as early as possible during summer months; July and August fill quickly despite the tiny capacity. The hut can accommodate groups of climbers and hikers crossing between France and Italy. Confirm opening dates before you travel, as staffing varies year to year. Pay cash on arrival if bringing euros, or arrange payment in advance via email.
