Neige et Merveilles

Neige et Merveilles sits at 2,100m in the Parc National du Mercantour, in the Alpes-Maritimes. The hut sits above the Vallée des Merveilles, a high plateau famous for Bronze Age rock carvings. Most hikers reach it in 3–4 hours from the Lac de Mesches trailhead (also called Refuge des Mesches). The walk climbs steadily through alpine meadow and scree, gaining 700m. In winter, skiers approach via the Colde la Lombarde from the Italian side. The hut works as a base for day walks across the plateau or as a stage on the GR52 long-distance route.
The hut holds 80 people in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are served communally. Showers are basic, and water comes from snowmelt in summer. The guardian opens from mid-June to mid-September; winters see occasional custodian presence but no reliable services. Book a bunk bed in advance during July and August, when the hut fills with families and trekkers. Solo hikers and small groups can usually find space in shoulder months. The hut is operated under FFCAM management and maintains a register for safety in this remote terrain.
Book directly by phone or email at least 4 weeks ahead for summer weekends. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is standard. The hut sits on the main tourist trail but remains quiet outside July–August. June and September offer better solitude and equally good weather.
