Refuge de Fontanalba

Refuge de Fontanalba sits at 2,018m in the Alpes-Maritimes, within the Parc National du Mercantour. The hut serves as a staging point for the Vallée des Merveilles and routes into the high plateaus. Most hikers approach from the Lac de Mesches side, a 2.5-hour walk gaining 500m. From the Castérino valley the hut takes 3 hours. The location offers access to the granite peaks and archaeological sites of the Vallée des Merveilles, making it popular with trekkers and mountaineers heading toward Mont Bégo or traversing toward the Refuge du Lacs des Turini.
The refuge operates year-round with capacity for around 30 guests. It runs as a simple mountain shelter with dormitory beds, basic cooking facilities, and water from the nearby stream. Meals are basic but hearty: dinner and breakfast are usually available when staffed, though you should confirm availability in shoulder seasons. There is no WiFi. The building is functional, not comfortable—expect a genuine refuge experience rather than an inn.
Book directly by phone with the guardian before visiting, especially outside July and August. July and August require booking 4–6 weeks ahead. The hut can fill quickly during summer holidays and with organized trekking groups. Check current opening dates before planning a winter or early spring visit, as staffing is irregular in quieter months. Arrive with supplies if you are uncertain about meal availability.
