About

Refuge de Sestrière sits at 2,612m in the Alpes-Maritimes, a serious day's walk from the Vallée de la Tinée. The standard approach climbs 1,400m over 5–6 hours from Auron. The hut also connects to the GR5 long-distance trail and sits on routes linking Mercantour and higher peaks in the southern Alps. Approach is hiking-only; no vehicle access. Winter approaches are often unreliable due to avalanche risk and snow cover.
The refuge is a small, traditional mountain hut run by FFCAM with capacity for 40 people in mixed dormitory rooms. Full board meals are available; the kitchen produces solid mountain fare. Water comes from meltwater and springs. The hut has no heating beyond a wood stove in the main room, and toilets are basic. Open July to September only. Mobile signal is weak or absent. The building is old and exposed to Mistral winds in summer.
Book directly with FFCAM or through their online system. Reserve by May for July and August, when the hut fills most weekends. June and September offer more flexibility. The warden lives on-site during the season. Confirm opening dates and conditions in early summer, as spring snow can delay access until late June.
