Chalet du Prabé

Chalet du Prabé sits at 1,650m in the Chaîne de la Chartreuse, above the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. The hut lies on the GR9 long-distance trail and is the natural base for traversing the main ridge of the Chartreuse massif. Reach it in 2.5 hours from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse via the Habert du Prabé trail, or 3 hours from the Col de Cucheron. Most hikers approach from the north. The location works well for day walks across the limestone plateaus or as a stopping point on multi-day ridge traverses heading toward the Chaîne de Belledonne.
The chalet operates as a staffed refuge and sleeps around 40 people in dormitory rooms. Half-board is standard (dinner and breakfast included); packed lunches are available. The facilities are basic but reliable—expect no-frills mountain accommodation with communal dining. Water comes from a spring. The hut opens mid-June through late September, though it may close temporarily during poor weather. Outside these months it functions as an unmanned shelter with very limited facilities.
Book directly by phone well ahead of your visit, especially for July and August weekends when the hut fills quickly. Contact details are available through the FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne). Call at least 4–6 weeks ahead if you're visiting in peak season. The hut prefers groups to register early. Check opening dates before traveling, as the season can shift depending on snow melt and staffing.
