Cabin de Prarochet

Cabane de Prarochet sits at 2,555m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, above the Vallée de l'Isère. The approach takes 3–3.5 hours from the Barrage du Ciré car park. You gain 900m through open meadows and sparse larch forest on a well-marked trail. The hut works as a base for traversing the Belledonne ridgeline or pushing toward Mont-Blanc massif crossings.
The cabin holds 44 beds in simple dormitory rooms. Meals are cooked on-site and served family-style. You can drink from a spring near the building. The hut operates from mid-June to late September. The guardian maintains it as a working mountain refuge, not a hotel—expect basic comfort and camaraderie. Staff speak French primarily; English is limited.
Phone ahead before arriving. July and August demand booking 6–8 weeks in advance. June and September are quieter but weather remains variable—bring rain gear. The hut sits exposed; afternoon thunderstorms are common. A torch is useful for early starts. If calling, confirm meals are available—some weeks the guardian takes a day off.
