Gite de la Léchère

Gîte de la Léchère sits at 1,850m in the Chaîne de la Chartreuse, north of Grenoble. The approach from Entremont-le-Vieux takes 2.5 hours on a well-marked trail through beech forest and alpine meadow. This is a valley-floor gîte rather than a high-altitude refuge, making it accessible for less experienced walkers. The location works well as a base for day walks in the Chartreuse massif or as a stopping point on longer ridge traverses.
The gîte operates year-round and has capacity for around 30 guests in mixed and private rooms. Meals are served daily and focus on local Chartreuse specialities—expect hearty mountain fare rather than restaurant ambition. Showers are available, and WiFi means you can plan onward routes or deal with urgent emails. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal compared to high-altitude CAF refuges. Winter access depends on snow conditions, so confirm beforehand if you're visiting December to March.
Book direct by email or phone at least 3 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Outside peak season, you can usually find space with a few days' notice. The gîte accepts cash and bank transfer. If you're combining this with higher routes—say, up to Hauts Plateaux du Vercors—factor in this as a comfortable intermediate night rather than pushing straight through.
