La Flégère

La Flégère stands at 1,877m on the slopes above Chamonix, a natural hub for walkers exploring the Vallée de Chamonix. Reach it in 1 hour 15 minutes on foot from Chamonix town center—climb steeply through forest, then gain the ridge. Alternatively, the télécabine from Chamonix lifts you to 2,042m; from there descend 15 minutes on trail. The hut sits on the GR Tour du Mont-Blanc route and connects easily to Lac Blanc (2 hours) and the Brévent sector (3 hours traverse). Most climbers use it as a base or stopover rather than a push for altitude.
The hut runs as a proper mountain refuge with 70 beds in dormitory rooms. Kitchen meals are available at lunch and dinner; book your meal the evening before. Hot showers work (water and power from a small hydro source). Toilets are basic. The hut operates year-round, though staffing thins outside summer season (June–September is peak). Winter access requires crampons and mountaineering skills on the approach trails.
Call the hut directly to check availability and reserve beds or meals. July and August book solid 4–6 weeks ahead. Shoulder seasons (May–June, September–October) fill less predictably. The hut sits inside Parc National des Écrins boundaries—know the rules on camping and fires. Day-trippers are welcome; overnight guests get priority on bunk placement. Pay cash or card on arrival.
