Refuge D'Anterne Alfred Wills

Refuge d'Anterne Alfred Wills sits at 1810m in the Chaîne des Aravis, above the Cluses valley in Haute-Savoie. The hut lies on the GR96 long-distance trail and serves as a basecamp for scrambling and day walks across the limestone ridge. Most hikers reach it in 2.5 to 3.5 hours from the Anterne carpark at Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (1461m), climbing steadily through mixed forest and alpine pasture. The final approach crosses open ground with views toward Mont-Blanc and the Giffre valley. Winter access depends on snowfall and is not reliable.
The refuge operates year-round and holds 54 beds split across shared dorms. Meals are served at table d'hôte format—expect hearty mountain cooking rather than choice menus. Showers are available, though water is heated seasonally. The atmosphere is working hut rather than polished: staff cater mainly to hikers and climbers doing the local circuit. The kitchen closes between lunch and dinner service. Mobile signal is weak to absent. Bring cash or cards accepted depend on current arrangements—confirm when booking.
