Refuge D'Argentière

Refuge d'Argentière sits at 2,771m on the north side of Mont-Blanc massif, accessed from the Vallée de Chamonix. The approach from Argentière village takes 2.5 to 3 hours via a well-marked trail that gains 900m steadily through alpine meadows and scree. Most hikers start early from the roadhead car park near Argentière to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. The hut is a logical staging point for Mont-Blanc attempts via the Grand Mulet route or for traverses across the high ridges of the Chamonix Aiguilles.
The refuge has 94 beds split across several dormitory rooms. FFCAM manages the hut and provides cooked dinners and packed lunches; self-catering is not permitted. A small kitchen serves hot drinks and snacks during the day. Water comes from melted glacier and must be treated. The hut opens from June through September, though exact dates depend on snow cover and road access. Winter climbing is possible but requires prior arrangement with the guardian.
Book directly by phone at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill completely by early summer. Phone the hut manager in the weeks before your planned visit to confirm bed availability and expected weather. The hut can become overcrowded during Mont-Blanc season; mid-week visits or shoulder months offer a more comfortable stay. Expect altitude effects above 2,700m even if you've acclimatised well at lower elevations.
